Dynamic Composition and Storytelling in Video Games
Limited Capacity seats available

The success of storytelling in games depends on the entire development team—game designers, artists, writers, programmers and musicians—working harmoniously together towards a singular artistic vision. However, the medium of video games is so young that we’ve yet to realize an equivalent to music notation.
Chris’ talk will provide development teams with a common design language to help shape their video game masterpieces. Examples from films and animations will illustrate the do's and don'ts of orchestrating the core components of their games to create complex stories and sophisticated aesthetic experiences.

Game Design Workshop: Practical steps to creating a winning game design

The central idea would be to share a high level summary of thought processes Mark uses when he sit down with a blank sheet of paper to create a new game.

It's about the rules, the moment to moment play, and the other simple details that are often skipped when people create a pitch or a game concept.

For each step in the process, Mark will share a concept and some high level thinking, then will let people work on their own ideas.

Topics covered:

- Simple rules for designing a game - cover the basics so we’re all on the same page and can talk the same language.

- Audience, theme and appeal - Who is your audience? How large it is? What is it about your theme that appeals to your audience? What is the fantasy your game is delivering for the player?

- Identifying the core game elements - What are they and what’s fun about them? What are the “rules” for how they work?

- Pulling all the elements together - How do you pull the elements together into cohesive game? What’s the core loop? What does the player do each time they come back to the game?

- Long term play - How do the elements of the game evolve over time? What keeps the game fresh and interesting over time?

- How to evaluate your own idea - how can you tell if your game design is fun before you build it?

How To Succeed with Rewarded Video Ads

Did you know that only 1% of the app store makes money through ads? A major reason for this is a reliance on traditional banners and interstitial ads – ad formats that have lower eCPMs than newer, high-engagement formats.

Enter Rewarded Video ads where users can opt to watch a video in exchange for virtual goods or gifts within the app!

Rewarded video is seeing huge adoption within the game developer community as developers are seeing their CTRs and eCPMs increase 2-3x after integration.

Stingray is built and designed around 3 core principles:

Lightweight – Stingray is a new engine that was built relatively recently when compared to other technologies, and that means that it has the advantage of truly modern design.

Powerful – By power, we not only mean that Stingray can provide extremely high level graphics, but I also mean that it is powerful in the sense that users can access and modify the underlying technology to make drastic changes that will let them build any kind of game they want, and easily.

Integrated. It has the best integrations with Autodesk 3D tools like 3ds Max, Maya, and Maya LT. These integrations will continue to improve over time, but we’re building toward a much better pipeline.

First Strike is a real-time strategy game featuring snappy gameplay and an intuitive interface that makes dropping the big one way too easy. Limited but clever options let you steer your nation’s fate: De-construct your stockpile in order to restructure your arsenal or use research to widen your options. Nuclear armageddon is no one’s dream scenario, so players have to chose their steps carefully in this game. It’s a small path between war and peace. The Kingdom of Commons: Use of CC license for games
Limited Capacity seats available

Specially with table top games, a very persistent problem is that designers rip off, and build over an existing game many a times. Trends are set and the world simply catches on to it. For example, deck building game is just everywhere since Dominion, but never do we come across any sort of attribution to the same. Many PnP versions of various games are also available online, but it doesn’t exactly fall under a legal framework and none of the significant tweaking, if any, are included in the core build of the game.

The patent issues with table top games is gaining grounds and even at this very moment game features like themes, game mechanics, art, and even storylines are getting patented at a high speed. But little do we realize, that in the name of safeguarding invention we are only strangling innovation. Board games and their rules are anyway close to being open source in non-literal sense. Free sharing and collaborative learning is the best possible way to ensure an idea a long life. And this is how many games have survived over centuries. In the present world, such a framework could be achieved using open source licenses.

What is an open source game? A true open source game is something that has been created from scratch, available for modification, additions and tweak, and over time, a significant part of those changes and additions will become an integral part of the core game. And again, new modifications could be done to the new core build and so on, keeping the older rule set still available for whoever wants to use it.

But when one mentions Creative Commons (CC) license, many thought instantly start to cloud our minds. Masses have to be educated about the particulars and advantages of publishing under free and open licenses, to help the games survive for long, without disregarding the contributors. To best explain this phenomenon, the case study of Cards Against Humanity should be picked up. It tells how an open source business model helped eight college students set up a business in Chicago and deliver a best seller game of present time.

Open source licenses have also been very helpful in making games relevant across cultures, geographies, languages and environments. With open source licenses, tweaking the existing source code (in this case the game mechanics, art and rules) and redistributing it among the relevant audience solves the problem, and it could also be further built upon if required.

Project planning is one of the most crucial and difficult step of a videogame project. It sets the scope of the game and its features and, through those, the amount of effort, time and money that is planned for it. Straying away from the scope or making errors in the project plan can cause its demise. Lack of time, money, content or quality are often caused by unexpected, unplanned, events. How to make sure it doesn't happen to you then?

This session describes how to build your videogame QA strategy and plan, step by step, see how much time and money it will require, and how to manage project creep, especially those caused by other parties like external publishers, developers or partners, to increase your and your partners chances of success.
